Wedding photographer: Midland Hotel Morecambe: Melissa & Kris

Had a great time at Melisa and Kris’ wedding at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe.

I’d not been to Morecambe before – it’s a really nice place, not dissimilar to North Wales in many ways, with long stretches of beautiful coastline.

The Midland Hotel is quite different from anything I’ve seen around here though. It’s got a 1920as/30s art deco look and feel to it, with everything from the architecture to the music giving you the sense of going back in time.

Melissa and Kris had a great wedding – nice to meet you guys x

Minori inspired fashion shoot

Minori inspired fashion shoot at Hafodunos

Here are some photos from a fashion shoot we did at the weekend.

The inspiration came from Japanese artist Minori, who our make-up artist Rhiannon Pritchard is a big fan of.

I met Rhiannon doing weddings – if you are looking to look your best on your wedding day, check her out. Make sure you book early, she’s in high demand.

Our set designer and stylist Thomasine (Tam) created three different sets at Hafodunos Hall.

Tam is involved in creating the decor for a lot of the events and festivals in North Wales. Get in touch with her if you need anything to do with fashion, styling, set design or simply to add some creative flair to your event.

The shoot will be used to promote fashion label Fox by Fabbri, the company behind the hand-made, hooded wasitcoat pictured here. More details on their great work coming soon.

The location, Hafodunos Hall, is a semi derlict ‘gothic revival’ house and estate. It’s quite spectacular and we owe a big thanks to Rick the owner for being so accommodating.

Although it is undergoing restoration, it has open days to the public. I’d also recommend it to other artists/photographers/film makers looking to hire a unique set.

Thanks to my artist friend Antonia Dewhurst, whose amazing photos are what led me here in the first place.

I think this is my favourite shot from the day – great work from our model Becca Jones. Get in touch with me if you’d like to book or work with her.

I underestimated how long the shoot would take (should have listened to Tam), so the second was done in the pitch dark.

Not easy taking photos in the dark, but I’d created a ‘wall of light’ using a bedsheet which worked great.

Started the year at Sarah and Joey’s great wedding at the Outbuildings on Anglesey.
It’s a really nice venue, perfect for a smaller, relaxed wedding.

North Wales Wedding Photographer: How to get a decent portrait in bad weather

North Wales wedding photographer gwynedd llanberis

Before photographing a wedding I meet up with the couple to do a pre-wedding shoot.

I really enjoy these, as there’s no pressure and it’s a good way to practice and get better photos on the wedding day itself.

Because North Wales is blessed with beautiful scenery, I generally do photo shoots on location.

I met up with Ellen and Andrew next to Llyn Padarn, the lake at Llanberis. It’s a great setting and I’ve done shoots there on a number of occasions, like this Lady of the Lake shoot.

However, on this occasion we come up against one of the pit-falls of location based photography – the weather.

The sun teased us with a brief appearance, but then gave way to heavy showers.

Some people say that the light can be quite flattering when it’s overcast, but in my experience it usually looks a bit flat.

For these photos I used a very simple set up – which you can see below – consisting of a flash, a cto gel, and an umbrella.

Umbrellas are good for softening light. If I were to use direct flash there would be a lot of contrast between the light areas and the shadows.

The cto gel is basically a bit of orange plastic that you stick over the light to make it look more natural.

It works well here – by accident, rather than design – because the colour of the light complements the greens and blue.

One good tip I’ve learned through bitter experience is to have your umbrella on a different light-stand/tripod to your flash.

Umbrellas, as well a being good light softeners, are also good sails and it doesn’t take much wind to send all your gear flying.

My second tip is it’s a good idea to get your light source close to your subject. This makes it softer, and you need less power from your flash.

A good starting point is to get your subject to turn their shoulders away from the light, then turn their head to look back at it. This is an easy way to create complimentary lighting.

These aren’t the most amazing pictures I’ve ever taken, but given the conditions I’m happy with what we got.

Being a photographer is largely about problem solving. In this scenario, the natural light was no good so we added some of our own.

Here are some photos from Bethan and Simon’s wedding at Treysgawen Hall on Anglesey.

It was an awesome day and I had a great time.

I went to meet Bethan and her family at her parents’ home near Amlwch. Bizarrely, I was on the same course at Bristol University as one of her bridesmaids, someone I hadn’t seen for at least ten years.

Small world!

Treysgawen is a great place for wedding photos, I like the grand feel it has.

This is the funniest group shot I’ve ever taken, it was hard to take the picture for laughing too much!

As well as having the awesome Mooncoin Caleigh band, they had a bandaoke band, something I’d not heard of before. It’s like karaoke, but you have the backing of a live band. Bethan and her hair stylist rocked the place.

Alternative North Wales wedding venue perfect for couples looking for something a bit different

north wales wedding photographer conwy falls cafe betws y coed

The first thing that couples usually do when planning a wedding is look for a wedding venue.

If you’re looking for something that’s a bit different from a traditional wedding venue, and want to make the most of North Wales’ natural beauty, then the Conwy Falls might be for you.

This is a cafe/restaurant near Betws-y-coed that friends of mine run, and which has woodland and a stunning waterfall in its grounds.

Not surprisingly, this makes it a great place to take photos 🙂

Oli and Bec – the owners –  are in their first year of catering for weddings so we did a mock-up photo shoot, with models Sophie and Al.

You may also be interested in hiring the services of Tam, a professional set-designer / dresser who can create a bit of magic pretty much anywhere!

Check out this 1930s shoot we did in a corner of the Faenol estate, for example.

If you like the idea of Welsh harp playing as you walk up the aisle, or even as you explore the woodland paths, then Ceri Rimmer is a very talented harpist.

North Wales Wedding Photographer: Scott&Beth @ Seiont Manor, Gwynedd

North Wales Wedding Photographer, seiont manor, caernarfon

Here are some photos from Scott & Beth’s wedding at Seiont Manor. It was a small and intimate wedding, and it was a pleasure to be a part of their day.

Seiont Manor is a great place to take photographs, as not only is the hotel itself very nice, the grounds offer a bit of everything – rolling fields, woodland, abandoned buildings… all the things I like for my style of photography.

Jayne & Bill got married at Trigonos, a lakeside retreat in North Wales, near Caernarfon.

Bill and some of the guests started the day by swimming in the lake, while Jayne and her bridesmaids where getting ready in the manor house.

The ceremony was outside, with the guests sat round in a large circle, so quite different from conventional weddings.

The photograph above has Snowdon in the background, although it’s obscured by cloud, and I think it’s a great advert for why couples should come to North Wales to get married!
